Inside Out Corner from All Bodies All Minds, Dwarfism by Rev. Laura Cannata

Writer's picture: Communications CoordinatorCommunications Coordinator

There are over 250 types of dwarfism worldwide. Dwarfisms’ main characteristic is short stature. Anyone 4 ft 11 inches or shorter is considered to have one of the many forms of dwarfism.

Other characteristics of dwarfism vary from type to type and, of course, person to person. An example would be the type of dwarfism I have called Cartilage Hair Hypoplasia or CHH. Some of the characteristics are hyperactive sweat glands, immune system issues, osteoarthritis, joint deformities, cancer, and little to no growth or development of hair or cartilage. I have some of these issues but not all of them, and my sister has others.

In society, people with dwarfism are often picked on for their size. We also have many medical problems and have to live in a world that is just too big. Stairs, counters, doors, and elevators all are built for average-height people.

Having dwarfism is not a death sentence. Many people with dwarfism live regular happy and predominantly healthy lives. They can be athletes, actors, ministers, doctors, activists, and so much more. They raise families, buy houses, and go on vacation.

This is not an exhaustive list. This is just a snapshot of some aspects of living with dwarfism. If you want to learn more, there are many books and documentaries. Also, feel free to email me at laura@rpucc.org
